New Philadelphia's 2026 Openings and the Downtown Ribbon-Cutting

September 24, 2026

City officials had been telling residents for months that a ribbon-cutting in downtown New Philadelphia was anticipated sometime between September 15 and September 23. A state grant paid for it, a governor's office representative was expected to attend, and the ceremony was expected to mark the finish of the downtown quadrant redesign, new restrooms included, that's been under construction for the better part of two years.

If you're picturing a grand unveiling of new storefronts, though, those openings followed their own timeline. Almost everything that's new to eat, drink, or shop at in New Philadelphia in 2026 opened before the planned September ceremony. Some of it opened with its own small ribbon-cutting back in May. Some of it slipped in quietly in July with no ceremony at all.

What the Planned Ceremony Was to Mark

The ceremony belongs to infrastructure, not commerce. It was intended to close out the downtown quadrant project, funded through the Governor's Appalachian Community Grant Program, and was expected to draw Governor DeWine along with John Carey from the Governor's Office of Appalachia and Lydia Mahalik from the Ohio Department of Development.

The city's own Mayor's Report spells this out plainly: the planned ribbon-cutting was to mark the redesign and the restrooms, coordinated around when state officials could get on the calendar together. It's a real milestone for downtown's physical footprint. Eating and shopping in town have followed their own timeline this year.

The West Side Already Had Its Moment

If you wanted to watch New Philadelphia's actual 2026 opening season unfold, Bluebell Drive was the place to be, and it happened months ago. Chick-fil-A opened at 140 Bluebell Dr SW on March 12, with the company's own announcement confirming the date and location. By July, Dunkin' Donuts had soft-opened a few doors down on Bluebell Drive NW, no ceremony required, just open doors and a new drive-thru line.

That's about six months before the planned downtown event, and it happened on the opposite side of town. If your mental map of "what's new in New Philadelphia" still centers on the square, the west side has openings to explore too.

Downtown Had Its Own Openings, Too

Downtown didn't sit still either. It handled its openings the way small businesses usually do: one at a time, with a small ceremony of their own. The city's May report notes that Toasted on the Square, in the northwest downtown quadrant, and Eagle HealthWorks, on Monroe Avenue NW, both cut their own ribbons that month. Those ceremonies marked new places to walk into before the planned September event.

Then in July, the same week Dunkin' soft-opened on the west side, Our City Coffee Roasters soft-opened downtown, according to the same Mayor's Report that first flagged the September ceremony. Add in Fuji Ramen, which had already opened at 415 E. High Ave in the space that used to be Pim's Thai, with Pim's relocating to The Venue on Front Avenue SW, and you've got a downtown that's been quietly rotating in new names since late winter.

Here's the sequence laid out, because the spread across the calendar is the point:

Business Location When it opened
Fuji Ramen 415 E. High Ave Open by February, in the former Pim's Thai space
Pim's Thai The Venue, Front Ave SW Relocated the same stretch
Toasted on the Square Downtown's northwest quadrant Ribbon-cut in May
Eagle HealthWorks Monroe Ave NW Ribbon-cut in May
Chick-fil-A 140 Bluebell Dr SW Opened March 12
Dunkin' Donuts Bluebell Dr NW Soft-opened in July
Our City Coffee Roasters Downtown Soft-opened in July

Seven businesses opening or relocating, five months, two different sides of town. A boba and dessert shop called BiteABubble has also joined the mix downtown this year, adding one more name to the list.

The Calendar Around Town

There's plenty happening in what's playing and running around town, too. Back on May 2 and 3, before the park's rides even opened for the season on May 23, Tuscora Park's spring Trout Derby put roughly 600 fish in local coolers out of 1,500 stocked, and Art on the Alley pulled a reported 1,500 visitors, some driving in from Cleveland and western Pennsylvania.

Look ahead instead of back and there's more on the calendar. The Kent State Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center has Asleep at the Wheel on September 24 and Celtic Thunder on September 27, both scheduled after the anticipated September 15–23 ceremony period. The Music Man follows on October 6, and Kansas closes out the PAC's fall run on November 1. Over at Tuscora Park, the Ohio State Alumni Club of Tuscarawas County holds its sixth annual Drive-up Fishing Expedition on October 1, a scholarship fundraiser that's become its own small tradition.

None of this is downtown's story or the west side's story specifically. It's activity across New Philadelphia, with plenty of dates to keep in mind.

What the Ceremony Was Intended to Mark

New sidewalks, redesigned quadrants, and public restrooms downtown are the kind of improvement that makes a town center more comfortable to spend time in, and that's worth a ceremony on its own terms. The business openings tell another part of the story: where to eat this week and what's changed at your regular coffee stop.

If you live here, the practical distinction is that the planned ceremony was intended to mark a civic milestone for the physical space. The new businesses are already open. Some of them are on the square. Some are out on Bluebell Drive.

Those are different parts of New Philadelphia's changes this year, each with its own timeline.
